This field was hit by frost but since we ensile it in wrapped
round bales it will make excellent feed.

Grazing PRO-TON in West Virginia
Cutting PRO-TON in West Virginia
www.hilltophavenfarm.com
PRO-TON is a mix of brown
mid-rib sorghum sudangrass, forage soybeans and forage peas.
PRO-TON Summer Forage Mix is an excellent
yielding summer forage. It is an annual crop. Our quality dry
stalk variety decreases drying time. Research at Texas A & M shows
yield comparable to corn silage on 45% less irrigated water. Input costs
are lower, as solid seeding eliminates need for weed control.
Replaces corn for silage.
Seeding rate: 100# - 125# per acre. Plant
no-till or conventional. If planting no-till a burn down should be used
to ensure good emergence.
Seed depth: 1/2" - 1" Drill on soybean setting.
PRO-TON can be seeded with a broadcaster as long as you cultipack it to ensure
good soil to seed contact. However, broadcasting of the different size
seeds makes it difficult to ensure a uniform stand.
PRO-TON Summer Forage works well when
planted no-till after harvesting Trical® Triticale Forage in
Spring, or double crop after wheat.
Fertilizer Requirements: 60# - 80# per acre
available N.P.K.
Field peas and soybeans will supplement
nitrogen requirements.
Weed Control: PRO-TON Summer Forage Mix
rapid growth, eliminates need for weed control.
Harvest:PRO-TON Summer Forage Mix is ready to cut
40-55 days after planting, regrowth is ready to cut 30-35 days. When you
notice the peas and soybeans starting to flower is a good sign to cut it.
PRO-TON Summer Forage Mix can be harvested as forage and silage bales.
PRO-TON planted in late may can provide a good 2nd cutting as well and has the
potential of producing 15-20 tons at 50% dry matter.
PRO-TON
planted after wheat in mid-July normally yields around 11-13 tons per acre at
50% dry matter.
